Additional Driver Policy

A fee of ZAR 110.00 incl VAT per additional driver, per rental.

Age Requirements

Minimum age is 21 years, maximum age is 70 years. Young drivers fee = ZAR 65.00 per driver per day. Young driver age is 21 to 23 years.

Condition of Vehicle

Vehicle must be returned, normal wear & tear expected, in the same condition as when rented. If special cleaning is required a separate charge will be made directly to the customer

Cross Border Policy

A letter of authorization must be requested at the time of pick-up for all cross border travelling.  National/Alamo will not be held responsible if a renter is refused entry into another country.  A certificate will be issued by the Namibian Authority and must be kept in the glove compartment of the vehicle.  The renter is responsible for the payment of the Cross Border Charge.  A non-refundable fee of ZAR 1000 will be levied for vehicles crossing into Mozambique and is payable directly by the renter.  A penalty fee of up to ZAR 5000 may be levied if the documentation is not produced.  The applicable excess amount will double, should the accident/theft occur outside the borders of South Africa or Namibia.  (i.e. Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Swaziland & Lesotho).  Exception to the rule: Executive Cover - e.g. SA Executive Cover taken, the relevant vehicle's Super Cover Excess applies.  Should the renter commence with a rental in South Africa and cross the border to Namibia and an accident/theft occurs - the original South African excess still applies.

Four days advance notice is required for Zimbabwe as Authorities now require the original registration documents for all vehicles crossing the border.

IT IS NOT PERMITTED to enter the countries of Angola and Zambia.

Vehicles SFAR & FFAR are not permitted to cross and are only available for rentals within South Africa

Licence Requirements

Government Legislation requires that whilst driving, the driver/s are required to have a valid unendorsed drivers licence in their possession.  Driver/s must have obtained their licence at least two years prior to renting a vehicle with National.  An International Drivers licence is not required, provided the original licence is in English (or any of our SA official languages) either on the licence or in a seperate accompanying document which is attached as an official translation of the licence). valid unendorsed licence is required. Drivers must have their licence at least 2 years prior renting a vehicle. An International drivers licence is not required, provided the original licence is in English, otherwise an international Driving Licence will be required.

One Way Rentals

One way rentals to Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe are not permitted.

1) Domestic one ways are available free of charge for the following:

Johannesburg to Kempton and vice versa, Johannesburg to Pretoria and vice versa, Johannesburg to Randburg and vice versa, Johannesburg to Sandton and vice versa, Kempton to Pretoria and vice versa, Kempton to Randburg and vice versa, Kempton to Sandton and vice versa, Pretoria to Randburg and vice versa, Pretoria to Sandton and vice versa, Randburg to Sandton and vice versa, Boksburg to Braamfontein and vice versa, Boksburg to Johannesburg International Airport and vice versa, Boksburg to Kempton Park and vice versa, Boksburg to Pretoria and vice versa, Boksburg to Randburg and vice versa, Boksburg to Sandton and vice versa, Braamfontein to Johannesburg International Airport and vice versa, Braamfontein to Kempton Park and vice versa, Braamfontein to Pretoria and vice versa, Braamfontein to Randburg and vice versa, Braamfontein to Sandton and vice versa.

2) Domestic one ways are available for the following:

Capetown International Airport and Downtown to: Boksburg, Braamfontein, Johannesburg International Airport, Pretoria, Randburg, Sandton and Port Elizabeth Airport (and vice versa) = R500.

Durban Airport and Downtown to: Boksburg, Braamfontein, Johannesburg International Airport, Pretoria, Randburg and Sandton (and vice versa) = R500. 

From: Johannesburg International Airport, Kempton, Rustenburg, Boksburg and Braamfontein to: Kruger Mpumalanga Airport and Stellenbosch (and vice versa) = R500. 

From Kruger Mpumalanga Airport to: Pretoria, Randburg and Sandton (and vice versa) = R500

From: Capetown International Airport, Capetown Downtown, Durban Airport, Durban Downtown, Kruger Mpumalanga Airport and Stellenbosch to Kempton Park and Rustenburg (and vice versa) = R500.

From Pietermaritzburg to: Braamfontein, Pretoria, Randburg, Sandton and Rustenburg (but not vice versa) = R500

From Rustenburg to: Johannesburg International Airport (but not vice versa) = R500

From Polokwane to: Capetown Int Apt, Capetown DT, Durban Apt, Durban DT and Stellenbosch (but not vice versa) = R500.

From Plettenbergbay to: Capetown International Airport, Capetown Downtown, Durban Airport, Durban Downtown and Stellenbosch (but not vice versa) = R500.

From: Port Elizabeth Airport, Pretoria, Randburg and Sandton to Stellenbosch (and vice versa) = R500.

Intra city one ways are free of charge.  All other one ways are charged at R330. One Ways Must be pre-booked.

Payment Policy

Payment can only be made by using a major credit card - MasterCard, Visa, Amex, etc. National Charge Cards and National Vouchers are also accepted. For car groups ICAR, FCAR, FFMR, PCAR, IVMR & LVMR, more than one credit card will be needed.  Travellers cheques, Eurocheques and cash are not accepted.  A deposit of ZAR 1000.00 for fuel and extras with applicable excess/liability (subject to product sold) is required on initiation of the rental.  The renter must be in possession of a credit card irrespective of product selection.  A credit card is always required for deposits, which is held on the credit card until the vehicle has been returned. 

Renters who receive traffic fines during the rental period will be charged a handling fee of ZAR 165.00 per fine, plus VAT, plus the amount of the fine received.

Insurance coverage offered by all major credit cards is accepted, provided the card holder has a letter from the company stating that they will insure the vehicle for the rental period.  This must be presented at time of rental.  In the event of damage or theft, the customers credit card will be billed for the relevant amount.  The customer would need to claim the money from their credit card company.

Refuelling Policy

Credit cards are not accepted at petrol stations in Southern Africa.  Fuel can only be purchased with cash.  If a tank of fuel was pre-paid (included in the product selection), the renter will not be refunded for any remaining fuel upon return of the vehicle.  If a tank of fuel was not pre-paid (exclusive product selection), the renter either has to fill the tank before returning the vehicle or alternatively the renter can return the vehicle to National/Alamo and pay for the refuelling upon return.  Each vehicle is refuelled on termination regardless of the fuel gauge indicator.

Roadside Assistance

In the event of breakdown: contact National on the emergency Roadside Assistance toll free number 086 0888 911 (South Africa only, please use the international dialling prefix if phoning from a roaming mobile phone).  We can assist with the following:  Minor Mechanical Assistance, Flat Tyre Assistance, Battery Jump-Start, Vehicle Lockout Service, Emergency Fuel (Delivery Cost of fuel for your account), Extrication/Winching Service, Towing Service and Message Relay Service.  Renters are requested not to replace or repair any vehicle parts unless authorized by National.  Renters who fail to get prior authorization from National will not be reimbursed for expenses incurred. 

In the event of an accident: the renter is required to contact National immediately on the emergency Roadside Assistance toll free number 086 0888 911 (South Africa only, please use the international dialling prefix if phoning from a roaming mobile phone).  A full report must be made to the nearest Police Station within 24 hours where an accident has occurred and 6 hours in the case of theft.  A case reference number must be obtained from the Police Station.  An Accident & Theft Report must be completed (these are obtainable from any National branch).  Personal belongings stolen or lost during an accident are not covered.  It would be advisable for Renters to obtain personal belonging insurance prior to their trip.

A replacement car will be provided if necessary for Accidents and Breakdown.

Special Equipment

The cost of Child seats is ZAR 94.60 + VAT per rental and must be booked at the time the reservation is made (On Request with 48 hours advance notice required). Type of seat required must also be specified. Seat types are:

Child/Infant seat     - CSI = 3 Months - 2 years

Child/Toddler seat  - CST = 2 years - 4 years

Child/Booster seat - BST = 4+ years

GPS is available on request for ZAR 99.99 (inc VAT) per day for all car groups.  A deposit of ZAR 4,000.00 is required and is available for one way rentals.  GPS is only available at the following locations: Johannesburg International Airport, Cape Town International Airport, Port Elizabeth International Airport and Durban International Airport.

Tow bars (TOW) are fitted to paxvans Groups LVMR (Y) & FFMR (J) only. This is on a request basis with 48 hours advance notice required, and must be pre-reserved at an additional cost of ZAR 129.00 + VAT per rental, should the vehicle not be fitted with a Tow bar already.

Mobile phones are supplied free of charge but with an insurance cost of ZAR 9.95 per day +VAT. A deposit authorisation will be taken against the renters credit card at the start of the rental of ZAR 1,000.00.  (On Request with 24 hours advance notice required).  Telephone charges are ZAR 2.60 per minute to numbers within South Africa. International calls are ZAR 10.00 per minute. There is no charge for incoming calls

Luggage Trailers (LTR) are available for Groups LVMR (Y) & FFMR (J) only at a cost of ZAR 129.00 + VAT per day and are available on request with 48 hours advance notice required.

All special equipment is available for one ways except for the Luggage Trailer (LTR).

Surcharges

Airport surcharge at 9% plus VAT of time and mileage. 

Contract fee - ZAR 25.00 plus VAT (applies to all rentals). 

Fine Handling Fee - ZAR 165.00 plus VAT. 

Claim Handling Fee - ZAR 400.00 plus VAT. 

Tourism Levy - 1% plus VAT.

Includes Theft Protection. Reduces the renters financial responsibility to the sum of the deductible
